PHOENIX — Interstate 17 south of downtown Phoenix will close each night through Friday as a project to reconstruct the bridge over Central Avenue nears completion.

Northbound lanes of I-17 will be closed overnight between the I-10 Split interchange near Sky Harbor Airport and Seventh Avenue from 9 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday and from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday for lane striping, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The westbound I-10 off-ramp at 24th Street is also set to be closed during these times.

Southbound lanes of the highway will then be closed between Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday and from 9 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday for lane striping.

The southbound I-17 on-ramp at 19th Avenue is also set to be closed during these times.

Central Avenue will also be closed overnight in both directions at I-17 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights and the street will be limited to local traffic in areas between Buckeye and Broadway roads.

Work on the $13.5 million project to build the new bridge is set to be complete this fall after beginning in May of last year, ADOT said.

The third lane in each direction of the highway recently reopened after more than a year.

Funded in part by a dedicated sales tax approved by voters in 2004, the new bridge will also provide increased clearance for commercial vehicles on Central Avenue as well as the future South Central Avenue light-rail line.
