PHOENIX — The city of Mesa announced Monday it has approved a purchase of the country’s first all-electric fire truck.

The pumper truck, projected to be in use late next year, is the first of its kind made in North America and put into service in the country.

“I’m an advocate for electric vehicles—it’s a better technology and this is one of many steps we can take to bring us closer to our Climate Action Plan goals,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said in a press release.

“We look forward to this as a study in the potential cost-savings and efficiency of electric vehicles in city operations.”

The truck manufactured by E-ONE will have low to no carbon emissions, according to the release, and feature considerably less noise pollution.

Four hose lines can be pumped at 750 GPM for four hours on a single charge, according to the release, while a range extension also allows for prolonged power needs and long-life batteries.

A Mesa fire station equipped with electric charging is set to open next month and house the truck, which will match the specifications of existing fire trucks in the city.

Purchase of the electric fire truck supports the city’s goal of being carbon neutral by 2050, according to the release.
