PHOENIX – Sarah Liguori was selected Monday to fill the Arizona House seat for District 28 vacated by Democrat Aaron Lieberman, who resigned last month to focus on his campaign for governor.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors chose Liguori to complete Lieberman’s term, which runs through 2022, from among three candidates.

“I look forward to this opportunity and strive to provide positive change to all people of Arizona,” Liguori said in an Arizona House Democrats press release.

Ginger Sykes Torres and Laura Terech were the other finalists who were submitted to the board by LD 28 precinct committeepersons.

“These are never easy decisions, especially when you have thee highly qualified candidates,” Supervisor Steve Gallardo, the only Democrat on the five-member board that govern’s Arizona’s largest county, said on Twitter.

“Sarah’s commonsense approach and her civic involvement in LD28 will be an asset in her Legislature tenure.”

Under state law, Lieberman’s successor was required to be from the same party and live in District 28, which includes parts of Phoenix and Paradise Valley.

Liguori is a licensed financial advisor who works in commercial real estate. She’s from Tucson and has lived in the Phoenix area for 15 years, according to a Board of Supervisors press release.

“Sarah Liguori is a working mom who understands her district,” Republican Supervisor Bill Gates said in the release.

“All the people nominated were excellent, but Sarah brings a private sector background and an eye to the future of our state that will serve the residents of District 28 well.”
