PHOENIX — Tempe city council members will consider renaming locations linked to a local Ku Klux Klan chapter, a suspect accused of robbing four metro Phoenix banks has been arrested, and an 18-year-old man died after a friend accidentally shot him in the chest.

Here are some of the biggest stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the weekend.

City of Tempe will consider renaming locations tied to former, local KKK members

In an upcoming session, Tempe city council members are to consider renaming city parks, streets and schools that have been linked to a local Ku Klux Klan chapter from the 1920s, officials said Friday.

Research done by the Tempe History Museum showed that three schools within the Tempe Elementary School District — Laird, Gililland and Hudson — as well as Hudson Drive, Hudson Lane, Laird Street and Hudson, Harleson and Redden parks all hold names of deceased members of the KKK’s Butte Chapter No. 3.

The council will meet to discuss the issue and intends to follow the outlines of a council-approved facility naming policy last updated in 2017.

FBI arrests woman who allegedly robbed 4 metro Phoenix banks

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested a suspect accused of robbing four metro Phoenix banks in September and October.

Taylor Stewart, 27, was taken into custody Oct. 14 in connection with the robberies that allegedly began Sept. 23 and ended the day before her arrest, the FBI said in a statement.

Stewart was said to target two banks in the East Valley and in Scottsdale, stopping by two Chase Banks, one US Bank and one Desert Financial Credit Union.

18-year-old man dead after gun accidentally discharged in Peoria

An 18-year-old man died after a friend accidentally shot him in the chest while cleaning a gun in Peoria, authorities said Thursday.

Roy Atkins was found with a gunshot wound at about 9:15 p.m. at an apartment near 83rd and Olive avenues, the Peoria Police Department said in a press release.

Atkins’ friend, Isaiah Kendrix, told police he was cleaning the gun and it discharged while it was being assembled.

Detectives believe the discharge was accidental, police said.

Phoenix adopts roadmap to cut emissions, reach net-zero goal by 2050

The city of Phoenix Tuesday approved a climate action plan with the goal of reaching net-zero by 2050 while also reducing 50% of emissions by 2030.

Actions included in the plan are transitioning city operations electrical use to carbon neutral by 2030 through energy reduction and solar projects as well as having all new construction be net-positive in both energy and materials by 2050.

The city also plans to increase support of energy efficiency, renewable energy and electric vehicle charging requirements in building codes to hopefully achieve carbon-neutral buildings throughout the city.

Other actions included in the report are supporting and preparing for 280,000 electric cars in Phoenix by 2030, in addition to expanding bus, light rail and bus rapid transit for carbon-neutral transportation by 2050.

The plan is a continuation of a vision voters supported in the 2015 general plan which sought to make Phoenix the most sustainable desert city on the planet.

Police arrest 20-year-old suspect in Scottsdale Holiday Inn shooting

A suspect has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the shooting of a man at a Scottsdale Holiday Inn last week, authorities said.

Avinady Juarez Gonzalez, 20, was booked on assault and weapons charges.

Police responded to reports of a shooting on Oct. 11 around 3 a.m. near Hayden Road and Princess Drive and found Ramon Alvarez shot once in the abdomen.

Alvarez was taken to a local hospital and remained in the intensive care unit as of Thursday night.

Authorities said the shooting stemmed from an argument that happened in a parking lot next to the Holiday Inn.
