PHOENIX — Mohave County authorities say two people drowned Thursday on the Colorado River north of Lake Havasu City.

A woman on board a boat fell into the water near Topock Gorge while trying to retrieve a personal item and a man then went in the water to help the woman, a Mohave County Sheriff’s Office statement said.

The man lost consciousness, was pulled from the water and taken to shore but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, the office said.

He was identified as 75-year-old James Weaver of Valley Center, California.

The woman went below the river’s surface and wasn’t immediately located, later being found Tuesday near the area where the incident occurred, authorities said.

She was identified as 68-year-old Suzan Weaver of Valley Center, California.

The investigation is ongoing.
