PHOENIX — A woman who left a shoplifter with serious injuries after shooting him Saturday afternoon has been charged with aggravated assault, authorities said.

Phoenix police responded to reports of a shooting near 34th and Dunlap avenues around 3:15 p.m. and learned that a woman saw a man shoplifting a convenience store.

As 41-year-old Miriam Shekhmoos tried to stop him, he pushed past her attempting to flee the area, so she shot him, Phoenix police Sgt. Ann Justus said in a press release.

Upon arrival, the unidentified man wasn’t in the area, but when officers found him he was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Shekhmoos was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail for aggravated assault.
