‘Saturday Night Live’ mocks Arizona’s Sinema over $3.5 trillion spending plan holdout

Oct 4, 2021, 12:25 PM

PHOENIX — “Saturday Night Live” wasted no time going after U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona for her stance on President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion spending plan during the show’s most recent episode.

The opening of the episode parodied a scene between Sinema, Biden, fellow holdout Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and other Democrats who attempted to come to an agreement to gain support for the plan.

Sinema, played by Cecily Strong, wouldn’t budge on her position on the proposed budget reconciliation bill.

“What do I want from this bill? I’ll never tell because I didn’t come to Congress to make friends and so far, mission accomplished,” Strong said as Sinema in the sketch.

Sinema and Manchin, who was coined the “de-facto president” during the sketch, have been in the spotlight as the only Senate Democrats opposing the proposed bill.

They’ve been at the White House on multiple occasions in recent days negotiating to reduce the cost.

Biden, played by James Austin Johnson, can’t make any progress convincing Sinema during the sketch.

With a 50-50 Senate seat split and holding the tie-breaker in Vice President Kamala Harris, Democrats don’t have any votes to spare if, as expected, they don’t get any Republican support.

“Look, as a wine-drinking, bisexual triathlete, I know what the average American wants,” Strong said as Sinema. “They want to be put on hold when they call 911. They want bridges that just stop and a car falls down. They want water so thick you can eat it with a fork and I will fight for that no matter what.

“Unless my foot hurts, then I’ll go back to Arizona.”

We want to hear from you.
