PHOENIX — Luxury electric sedans began rolling off the assembly line at a Casa Grande manufacturing plant Tuesday as production of a California-based company’s vehicles got underway.
Lucid Group started production on its Lucid Air electric vehicles with a commissioning ceremony at its advanced manufacturing plant, according to a press release.
“Today’s event signifies a new era in electric vehicle manufacturing in Arizona,” Gov. Doug Ducey, who attended the celebration, said in a press release. “Lucid’s ongoing investment in Arizona represents an investment in good jobs and livelihoods for Arizonans now and in the future.
“We are proud to call the Lucid Air ‘Made In Arizona’ and look forward to many more innovations to come.”
The nearly 1-million-square-foot facility is the first greenfield, dedicated electric vehicle factory to be built in North America and will produce the company’s Air Dream Edition models, the company said.
The vehicles have an EPA range of up to 520 miles on a single charge, more than 100 miles over its competition, Lucid Motors said.
“The proprietary EV technology that Lucid has developed will make it possible to travel more miles using less battery energy,” Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid Group, said.
“Our technology will allow for increasingly lighter, more efficient and less expensive EVs, and today represents a major step in our journey to expand the accessibility of more sustainable transportation.”

The facility will result in an economic impact of more than $100 million by 2030 and create approximately 6,000 direct jobs, according to the release.
Lucid Group also embarked on a 2.85 million-square-foot expansion to the facility to support additional production, including the company’s Gravity SUV beginning in 2023.
The company starting production of its electric vehicles in Arizona is just the latest milestone for the state, which has become a popular spot for the industry.
Atlis Motor Vehicles established a manufacturing facility in Mesa in 2016, while Nikola and ElectraMeccanica also recently broke ground on manufacturing facilities in the state, according to the release.
Additionally, Zero Electric Vehicles recently announced it will open a new headquarters and production facility in Gilbert.
