1 child dead, another critically hurt after being shot at south Phoenix residence

PHOENIX — One child is dead and another was in critical condition Monday after being shot at a residence in south Phoenix, police said.
Officers responded to a home near Seventh Street and Broadway Road around 11:45 a.m. and found the two children, a 2-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, authorities said.
The kids, who are believed to be siblings, were taken to a hospital, where the girl died.
The 24-year-old mother of the children was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has been detained by police, authorities said.
The father of the children is cooperating with investigators.
No other individuals were in the residence at the time of the shooting, Phoenix Police Sgt. Ann Justus said.
A motive hasn’t yet been determined, according to Justus.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
