Pilot killed, passenger survives after plane crashes in northern Arizona

PHOENIX – The pilot of a small plane was killed and a passenger survived after a crash Wednesday evening in northern Arizona, authorities said.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said the crash was reported around 5:30 p.m. in the Paria Plateau area west of Page, near the Utah border.
The report came from a friend who’d been called by the survivor, CCSO said in a press release Thursday.
The plane came from San Martin, California, and crashed on approach to the Page Municipal Airport, according to the release.
The exact location could not be determined from the original report. The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center helped authorities find the aircraft’s last known radar location.
The Classic Air Medical emergency service then located the crash site and confirmed that pilot Jim Petersen was dead. He was transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff.
The survivor, Uta Petersen, was flown to a hospital in St. George, Utah.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
The NTSB said the plane was a Piper PA28R-200.
