PHOENIX — A member of the Downtown Phoenix Ambassadors died Tuesday after being struck by an alleged drunk driver in August, Downtown Phoenix Inc. said.

Hans Hughes, an ambassador for 12 years, was hit while riding his bike home from work on Aug. 20, according to a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Hughes, 43, was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a month later, according to the post.

“Today Downtown lost a superhero,” the post read. “We love you so much Hans, and we know the entire community does too.”

A spokesperson for Phoenix police told ABC15 in August the driver suspected of hitting Hughes at 1st and Filmore streets was arrested and cited for DUI and failure to stop.

The identity of the suspect was not released.

A GoFundMe page was set up for Hughes in August, raising more than $41,000 as of Wednesday evening.

Funeral services for Hughes will be announced at a later date, according to the post.

Downtown Phoenix Ambassadors provide numerous services to people in the city, including walking escorts, car battery jumps, restaurant recommendations and personalized tours, according to the official website.
