Former Phoenix Police dog that worked with the department for over a decade dies

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department last week said goodbye to a four-legged friend that worked with the department for more than a decade.
A former Phoenix Police K9 named Gilly died at his home Wednesday, the Phoenix Police Department said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
Gilly became part of the department in 2009 and worked for over 10 years as a patrol and narcotic detection dog before calling it a career in August of 2019.
The dog retired with his handler and spent the rest of his life being spoiled by his family, the post said.
Phoenix Police K9s are mainly used as a locating tool for police, according to a press release.
In addition to helping locate suspects, the dogs also aid in finding drugs and explosives, or other crime scene evidence.
The Phoenix Police Department added four dogs to the unit last year, according to the release, bringing the total to 17 dogs as of December 2020.
