PHOENIX – The first Phoenix firefighter to die of COVID-19 will be remembered in a line-of-duty memorial service Wednesday, authorities said.

Miguel Angulo, a 15-year veteran of the Phoenix Fire Department, died Sept. 6 after a long battle with the virus.

The firefighter/paramedic spent most of his career at Station 25 in Maryvale.

His life and career will be celebrated in an 11 a.m. service at Christ’s Church of the Valley on Happy Valley Road near 67th Avenue in Peoria.

That will be followed by a procession to Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary & Cemetery on Van Buren Street west of Interstate 17 in Phoenix, where a graveside service will be held.

The procession will travel east on Happy Valley Road, south on 67th Avenue, east on Loop 101 and south on I-17 to the McDowell exit, which leads to Van Buren Street.

“Miguel was a dedicated public servant and family man who loved serving his community,” the department said in the Sept. 7 press release announcing his death. “He had a big personality and an even bigger heart.”

We want to hear from you.
