PHOENIX – A 7-year-old boy who was trapped under water after the off-road vehicle he was riding in crashed into a West Valley river bottom over the weekend has died, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
MCSO said an adult male was driving the vehicle on Saturday when it rolled over into standing water in the Salt River channel near 71st Avenue and Roeser Road, south of Broadway Road.
Rescue teams freed the child from the vehicle, which was submerged about 8 feet deep, and transported him to a hospital in extremely critical condition, the Phoenix Fire Department said Saturday.
Initial reports said the boy was 10 years old, but MCSO said Monday he was 7.
MCSO detectives are investigating the incident.
