PHOENIX — Summer heat isn’t in the rearview mirror yet in Phoenix.

A 30-year-old daily heat record was broken at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday when the mercury reached 111 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The previous record of 110 degrees for the day was set in 1990.

A respite from the hot temperatures isn’t expected to come soon, either.

The mercury is forecast to reach 107 degrees on Friday and 106 degrees on Saturday before jumping up to 109 again on Sunday.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect in Phoenix until 8 p.m.

The Arizona Department of Health Services said almost 3,000 people a year wind up in emergency rooms around the state suffering from heat-related illnesses.

Homeless, infants, young children and adults 65 or older are among those who are most susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

To protect yourself against heat sickness, the health department recommends drinking water, dressing properly for hot weather, wearing sunscreen and avoiding strenuous activity, among other things.
