PHOENIX — A portion of eastbound Interstate 10 in the East Valley will be closed this weekend as a pavement project to improve the riding surface along the highway gets underway.

Eastbound I-10 between Avondale Boulevard and 99th Avenue will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, along with eastbound I-10 on-ramps at Litchfield and Dysart roads, the Arizona Department of Transportation said in a press release.

Crews during a series of weekend closures this fall will remove the top layer of older, worn rubberized asphalt along sections of I-10 west of the Interstate 17 Stack interchange.

The $12 million project will take place in segments between I-17 and Avondale Boulevard, excluding the area between 43rd and 67th avenues, which already received a new layer of rubberized asphalt during construction of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway interchange, ADOT said.

Lane striping and shoulder adjustments during the project will allow the expansion of the southbound Loop 101 ramp to the westbound I-10 from one lane to two lanes, along with another westbound I-10 travel lane between 67th Avenue and Avondale Boulevard.

Crews early next year will put the finishing touches on the project by diamond grinding the surface, which ADOT also did on sections of Loop 101 and Loop 202.
