PHOENIX — Repeated rounds of thunderstorms and rain have this year’s monsoon season in metro Phoenix among the top five for most days with measurable rainfall, officials said Monday.

Phoenix has recorded 20 days of more than .01 inches of rain from when the monsoon season started on June 15, already ranking fourth-best since record keeping began in 1896, according to the National Weather Service.

The Valley has a chance to move up that list with more than two weeks before the monsoon season comes to a close on Sept. 30.

More than 3.88 inches of rain have fallen since mid-June, marking this year’s season as the third-wettest since 2000, trailing behind 2014 (6.34 inches) and 2008 (5.70 inches).

The rain is a pleasant sight after back-to-back underwhelming monsoon seasons.

Phoenix recorded 1 inch of rain in 2020 and .66 inches in 2019.

While there is still some time left in this year’s monsoon season, the Valley will remain dry and hot as people head back to work following the Labor Day holiday.

The high temperature in Phoenix is expected to be above 105 degrees beginning Tuesday and lasting through the rest of the week and into the weekend.
