US 60 to be closed in both directions between Superior and Miami

PHOENIX — Both directions of U.S. 60 between Superior and Miami will be closed from Sunday night until the following Friday as part of the Pinto Creek Bridge replacement project.
The closure will begin at 10 p.m. Sunday and end at noon Sept. 17 as crews realign the roadway to meet with the new Pinto Creek Bridge, the Arizona Department of Transportation said in a press release.
Traffic will be redirected onto State Routes 77 and 177 through Winkleman during the closure, which will add about an hour of travel time and include a 10% grade, according to ADOT.

Drivers who need to reach a destination within the closure can pass through, but no vehicles will be allowed between Top-of-the-World and Pinto Valley Mine Road.
Crews will work during the entire time of the closure as they shift the highway roughly 30 feet and raise it up 8 feet to align with the new structure, which is replacing a 72-year-old bridge.
Once shifted, crews will begin removing the old structure and restoring the site, ADOT said.
The work marks a major milestone in the two-year, $22.7 million project, according to the release.
Another far shorter closure is planned for sometime in October as crews take down the old bridge, with ADOT saying drivers should expect only a four-hour shutdown of the highway.
Occasional lane restrictions may also be required through the rest of the year as crews work on the finishing touches of the project.
