PHOENIX – Authorities in northern Arizona said Wednesday they believed they have recovered the body of a man who went missing at the Grand Canyon weeks ago.

Rangers at the Grand Canyon National Park discovered a body on the South Rim below Yavapai Point on Monday. Based on what they found on the person, they thought it was Gabor Berczi-Tomcsanyi, 45.

The search for him began Aug. 9 after his car was found parked at the visitor center.

Park officials said they think he arrived on or around July 19.

A welfare check call from Las Vegas police prompted rangers to start looking for the Hungarian national, whose family had reported him missing after a stay there.

Investigators had determined Berczi-Tomcsanyi didn’t have a backcountry permit or room reservations at the park.

A park spokeswoman said it wasn’t uncommon for vehicles to be parked in any of the lots for weeks at a time.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
