PHOENIX — The expansion of the Interstate 17 bridge over Central Avenue in Phoenix is nearing completion following the successful pour of concrete on the northbound side of the bridge, officials said Monday.
The $13.5 million project, which began in May 2020, is on schedule to be completed this fall, Arizona Department of Transportation said in a press release.
Construction of the new bridge will allow more room for traffic, additional lanes when future funding is available and future light-rail trains along Central Avenue, ADOT said.
Crews used an extended boom pump system to haul the concrete to the level of the bridge’s deck, and specialized equipment to smoothen out 545 cubic yards of concrete, ADOT said.
Since the beginning of construction, few full freeway closures have been needed, allowing for traffic on the I-17 to move as much as possible with two lanes in each direction within the work zone, ADOT said.
The project is funded in part by Proposition 400, a sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.
