PHOENIX – Western Powerline Trail users don’t have to worry about crossing the train tracks near downtown Gilbert anymore.
More than a year after construction started, a new pedestrian bridge over the tracks near Neely Street west of the Heritage District is now open, the town announced Thursday.
A grand opening ceremony has been scheduled for 6 p.m. on Aug. 26 at the base of the footbridge near 393 N. Neely Street, north of Elliot Road.
Bicyclists, joggers and walkers no longer have to stop for trains or step over rails and ties on the East Valley trail, which runs along the Western Canal in Gilbert and Chandler.
The bridge was a partnership between Gilbert and the Arizona Department of Transportation and will serve as a gateway to the town’s popular dining district.
The structure features railroad-themed art, corrugated metal panels and cable railings.
Construction began in June 2020 and continued past the estimated completion time of February 2021.
