PHOENIX – Interim Tempe Police Chief Jeff Glover was appointed on a permanent basis Wednesday after nearly a year on the job.

Glover, the East Valley city’s first Black police chief, stepped into the position in October 2020, after Sylvia Moir resigned the previous month.

He had retired from the department in February 2020 after 20 years of service.

Glover said he was humbled by the amount of trust placed in him by the community and city leaders.

“Protecting and serving as a Tempe police officer for over two decades has been a blessing and a privilege,” Glover said in a press release.

“To be selected as permanent chief of police is the honor of a lifetime.”

Since rejoining the department, Glover has served on Mayor Corey Woods’ public safety advisory task force, a group that is working to increase trust in policing.

Glover began his law enforcement career in 1998 as a patrol officer with the Mesa Police Department.

He joined the Tempe agency in 1999. His roles included commander over the Professional Standards Bureau, Organizational Services Division and Criminal/Special Investigations and SWAT.
