PHOENIX – A teenage boy was taken to a hospital in serious condition but is expected to survive after getting hit by a vehicle near a Phoenix high school Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The 14-year-old student was crossing 59th Avenue between backed-up vehicles, outside the crosswalk, while walking to Betty H. Fairfax High School when he was struck at around 8 a.m., Phoenix Police Sgt. Vincent Cole said during a press conference.
The boy was in stable condition with unspecified injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening, Cole said.
The vehicle involved had been heading northbound on 59th Avenue south of Baseline Road. The driver remained on the scene and was not cited, Cole said. There was no indication speed or impairment were factors, he said.
“With school starting again, there’s kids everywhere,” Cole said. “There’s a lot more pedestrian traffic, particularly in this time of day, and we urge drivers to please be cognizant of kids crossing midblock — even though they’re not in a crosswalk — speed limits around schools, just to be extra cautious as school opens back up.
Tuesday was the second day of classes at Fairfax, which is part of the Phoenix Union High School District.
“We also would remind pedestrians to avoid crossing midblock, to utilize crosswalks, crossings, things like that,” Cole said.
