PHOENIX – One person was killed after running a red light and seven others were taken to the hospital early Monday following a fiery crash at a Phoenix intersection, first responders said.

An SUV and a truck collided at 71st Avenue and Indian School Road, where a Phoenix Fire Department crew found them burning around 4:30 a.m.

The driver of a Chevy Trax was pronounced dead at the scene, the Phoenix Police Department said. He was alone in the SUV heading west, they said, when he smashed into a southbound Chevy Silverado that was pulling a trailer.

One person in the truck, a 26-year-old man, suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.

The remaining occupants of the truck suffered injuries that weren’t life-threatening, according to police.

Three young women, ages 19, 18 and 17, were also taken to the hospital, as were four men ages 28, 26, 25 and 22.

Phoenix Police Department officers closed the street for the investigation.

No other details were immediately available.
