PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix shot and killed a man they said came at them with a knife Tuesday at a home where his children were.

The Phoenix Police Department said officers were sent to an apartment near 30th and Fillmore streets on a domestic violence call around 7:10 p.m.

A woman had told police on the phone that her husband had a knife and had already struck her several times.

Police said the dispatcher reported hearing children crying in the background during the call.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the woman, who was crying outside. She told them her husband was still in the apartment with the five children, police said.

As another officer approached the apartment, the man came out of the unit carrying the knife. When he didn’t respond to commands to show his hands and kept coming toward them, the retreating officer shot him, police said.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he died, police said.

It was the 13th shooting of the year involving Phoenix police, and 35th overall in the Valley by law enforcement, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
