Broadway Curve project in East Valley starts with I-10 closure Friday

Jul 20, 2021, 4:35 AM | Updated: 8:33 am

PHOENIX — The Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project is set to get underway Friday with the first of several weekend closures this summer.

Westbound I-10 will be closed between the Loop 202 Santan Freeway and U.S. 60 from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday, along with the westbound I-10 on-ramps at Loop 202, Chandler Boulevard, Ray, Warner and Elliot roads.

The first phase of the project will continue through early September, the Arizona Department of Transportation said in a press release, as crews work on removing asphalt from I-10 between Loop 202 and Interstate 17, and from U.S. 60 at I-10.

The driving surfaces will be restored after construction is completed on the project in late 2024, according to the release.

Each of the weekend closures will occur in segments and range from one to seven miles, ADOT said, with only one direction of travel being affected at a time.

The next weekend closure will be on eastbound I-10 between U.S. 60 and Loop 202 on July 30 through Aug. 2 during the same time span.

The entire project, which is being funded by a half-cent sales tax in the county approved by voters in 2004, will cover 11 miles of the highway between the I-17 “Split” and Loop 202 Santan and South Mountain freeways.

I-10 will be widened to six general purpose lanes and two high-occupancy lanes in each direction between the U.S. 60 and I-17, along with adding a fourth general purpose lane in each direction between Ray Road and U.S. 60.

Other portions of the project include adding collector-distributor roads parallel to I-10 between Baseline Road and 40th Street, rebuilding of the I-10 interchange with SR 143 and replacing the Broadway Road bridge over I-10 as well as the 48th Street bridges over I-10.

The project also includes widening the I-10 bridges over the Salt River as well as building two bridges for pedestrians and bicyclists over I-10 between Baseline and Broadway roads and improving the Sun Circle Trail crossing at Guadalupe Road.

Sound and retaining walls will also be built where warranted as part of the project.

People can keep track of progress on the project on its official website as well as on a free mobile app.
