PHOENIX — Fourth of July DUI arrests in Arizona jumped this year from a pandemic-skewed holiday in 2020 but were down from weekend totals in 2019.

From Friday through Sunday, 448 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Of those arrests, 103 were for extreme DUI, meaning they had a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher.

During the holiday weekend in 2020, 190 people were arrested for DUI and 51 were cited for extreme DUI.

In 2019, there were 512 DUI arrests and 141 extreme DUI arrests in Arizona over the Fourth of July weekend.

The average known BAC of those arrested over the past weekend was .150. The legal BAC in Arizona is 0.08.

The report also noted that 133 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.

Law enforcement conducted a total of 8,270 traffic stops compared to 5,240 in 2020. Officers made 15,174 traffic stops over the holiday weekend in 2019.
