KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan lawmaker says a senior prosecutor from an eastern province bordering Pakistan has been assassinated outside his home in the capital, Kabul.
Mujibullah Rahman, who represents Paktia province in the Afghan parliament, said on Friday that the province’s chief prosecutor, Najibullah Sultanzoi, was shot dead by a gunman when he answered a knock at the door of his home on Thursday night.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the killing.
Attacks on judicial officials have escalated recently. This month, buses ferrying employees of the Attorney General’s office to and from work were attacked three times.
Meanwhile, police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashraqiwal in eastern Nangarhar province says a suspected U.S. drone strike on a car killed five militants and wounded one on Thursday night. There was no comment from U.S. officials.
