2-year-old girl dies after drowning in lake near Chandler apartment complex

PHOENIX — A 2-year-old girl has died after drowning in a community lake near an apartment complex in Chandler on Tuesday evening, authorities said.

Chandler Police Department officers were dispatched to the apartment complex near Alma School and Chandler Heights roads just after 5:30 p.m. after a family member called to report the girl missing.

Officers checked the area and found the girl unresponsive in an adjacent community lake, authorities said.

Life-saving measures were performed on the child before being transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

Authorities say the child walked out of her apartment unnoticed while being watched by a family member.

It is unknown how long the child was in the lake.

An investigation is ongoing and no additional information was available at this time.
