PHOENIX — An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper rescued a golden eagle in distress on Interstate 17 near Camp Verde on Wednesday, authorities said.
The trooper while patrolling the highway found what he thought was debris on the road but then realized it was an eagle, according to a tweet.
He coaxed the eagle off the road and called the Arizona Game and Fish Department, which transported it for further care.
It was determined the female golden eagle was overheated but seems to be uninjured and is receiving fluids and food at the Wild at Heart Raptor Rescue.
Officials say the eagle is recuperating nicely.
Arizona is in the middle of the first heatwave of the summer, with high temperatures in the Valley tying records on Tuesday and Wednesday before breaking the daily heat record on Thursday.
