PHOENIX – The metro Phoenix suburb of Gilbert is closing its town hall next week for a major renovation that is expected to take about a year.
The structure formally known as Gilbert Municipal Building I, which will shut down Monday, hasn’t been renovated since it was constructed at 50 E. Civic Center Drive in 1992, the town said in a press release Wednesday.
The town hall is Gilbert Civic Center’s main administrative building and houses council chambers and offices, the mayor’s office and a variety of other departments.
The exterior glass, HVAC systems, roofing, flooring, fixtures and furniture will be replaced during the renovation process.
Construction will add about 1,700 square feet to the building and about 50 additional workstations.
Town Council meetings will be held at the Atlas Auditorium of the Gilbert Public Safety Training Facility at 6860 S. Power Road until the work is completed.
The Planning and Redevelopment commissions will meet at the police department’s amphitheater at the Civic Center.
The locations for other public meetings will be posted on the East Valley town’s website.
Departments and services based out of Gilbert Municipal Building I will be relocated temporarily to other sections of the Civic Center in Municipal Building II, the Fire Administration Building and Gilbert Municipal Court.
The mayor and council offices will set up shop in Municipal Building II at 90 E. Civic Center Drive.
