Severe thunderstorm in East Valley knocks out power to thousands

PHOENIX — A severe thunderstorm knocked out power to thousands in the East Valley late Tuesday night.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for an area that includes Paradise Valley and Scottsdale just before 8:45 p.m. and was scheduled to last until 9:15 p.m.

The warning called for winds of up to 60 miles per hour with penny-sized hail possible.
Power was knocked out to about 3,000 homes and businesses in the Apache Junction area due to the storm, according to the SRP outage map.

Tuesday marked the first day of the 2021 monsoon season.
The storm activity comes as the Valley is in the middle of a heat wave.
The high temperature of 115 degrees on Tuesday tied a record that was set in 1974.
It’s possible other heat records could be broken this week as temperatures are expected to be in the 115- to 120-degree range through Friday.
