PHOENIX – One person was killed and another seriously injured Tuesday morning in a plane crash at Gila Bend Municipal Airport, authorities said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane caught fire after it crashed after taking off around 8:20 a.m.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, which responded to the crash near the airport’s runway, said one occupant was ejected from the aircraft. That person was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The other occupant was pronounced dead at the scene, MCSO said.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

No other details were immediately available.

The airport is located southwest of the Phoenix area, near State Route 85 and Interstate 8.
