PHOENIX – State Rep. Reginald Bolding has stepped up to become the second Democrat to join the field chasing the 2022 Arizona secretary of state job.

The 35-year-old House minority leader jumped into the race Monday with the announcement.

“From teaching students in the classroom, to legislative leadership, to the helm of one of the most successful nonprofit organizations dedicated to civic engagement, I’ve spent my career serving Arizona,” Bolding said in a press release.

“Standing up for voting rights and your access to the ballot isn’t new to me. I’ve been on the front line fighting for our democracy for years and I look forward to continuing that work as secretary of state.”

Bolding follows former Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes into the Democratic primary.

Fontes announced his intention to run Friday.

Bolding has been a vocal opponent of recent changes to Arizona voter laws, including SB 1485, which will remove inactive voters from the list of voters who automatically receive early ballots in the mail.

The Republican primary field is headlined by two state lawmakers, Sen. Michelle Ugenti-Rita and Rep. Mark Finchem.

Secretary of state is Arizona’s chief election officer and first in the line of succession to the governor.
