Funeral service held for Phoenix Police Officer Ginarro New

PHOENIX – The funeral service for Phoenix Police Officer Ginarro New, who was killed in a collision with a red-light runner last week, was held Thursday morning.

The public service at Dream City Church, 13613 N. Cave Creek Road in Phoenix, was livestreamed on the Phoenix Police Department’s Facebook page.

“It feels unfair that we didn’t get to do as many things as we wanted to do, so many milestones we never got to get to,” Kristen New told dozens of mourners. “But I would relive the time I had with him a thousand times over because he was my soulmate.”

No graveside service or procession was planned for after the funeral, but police honors took place in the church courtyard.

New, 27, joined the department in July 2019, just a few months before he got married. At his graduation, Police Chief Jeri Williams recalled being “struck by the poise and confidence he possessed as a brand new officer.”

“By all accounts, he was on his way to a very successful career,” Williams said, choking up at times.

Officers in his precinct, his commanding officer and a former field training officer spoke of his compassion, integrity and work ethic. He found police work to be the best fit after a career path that included stints as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, a school nurse and an EMT.

New was on duty May 31 when a car driven by 31-year-old Christopher Castro sped through the intersection of Greenway Parkway and Cave Creek Road and slammed into the officer’s patrol Tahoe.

Both men died as a result of the impact.

New, who is survived by his wife, mother, brother and grandmother, was the 41st Phoenix Police officer to die while serving.
