PHOENIX — An Arizona man was arrested for his role in the Jan. 6 riots in Washington, D.C., after his stomach tattoo from a 2012 booking photo was matched to body-worn footage from inside the U.S. Capitol, authorities said Wednesday.
James Burton McGrew was arrested Friday in Glendale and was charged with several crimes, including assaulting, resisting or impeding an officer, acts of physical violence in the Capitol grounds and obstruction of an official proceeding.
Footage from a body cam worn by an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia shows McGrew lifting up his shirt to wipe his eyes during the riot to reveal the stomach tattoo, which reads “KING JAMES,” according to a criminal complaint.
Multiple videos also show McGrew strike an officer before rioters were pushed back by law enforcement, the complaint said.
McGrew later moved forward again, struck another officer and then lunged for that officer’s baton, according to the complaint.
Multiple witnesses came forward following the riots with additional videos and photos that placed McGrew inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, the complaint said.
McGrew’s initial appearance in front of a judge was Monday.
A total of six suspects with Arizona ties have been arrested in connection with the Capitol riots.
More than 400 people have been charged so far in the siege.
