PHOENIX — Arizona grocer Bashas’ has named three winners from its annual donut flavor competition.
The top entries were from a 12-year-old boy from Queen Creek, a woman from Phoenix and another woman from Mesa, according to a press release.
Bashas’ invited kids, adults and employees to create an international-inspired flavor to be placed in the store’s donut cases this year.
Braxton from Queen Creek won the kids’ category with his Italian-inspired Kinder Joy Donut that is filled with buttercream, topped with chocolate hazelnut spread and covered with crushed wafer cookies.
Heather Hirsch from Phoenix won the adult category with her Greek-inspired Baklava Donut that is made with cinnamon, dipped in a honey glaze and topped with chopped pistachios.
The employee category was won by Mesa resident Kristine Pearce, who works at the store on Baseline and Crismon roads. Her donut is a Peruvian-inspired Delirium Donut that is filled with Bavarian cream, topped with chocolate icing, sprinkled with crushed pecans and drizzled with caramel.
Each of the winners receives one dozen donuts every month for a year and $500 worth of prizes including a gift card to the store, baking and cooking gadgets as well as family-fun activities.
The winning treats will be available at Bashas’ donut cases through June.
In honor of National Donut Day on Friday, those who buy a dozen donuts at the store will receive six additional donuts for free while the store will also donate 10% of its donut sales to the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army established the day in June 1938 to honor volunteers who served donuts to soldiers on the frontlines of World War I, according to the release.
