PHOENIX – A portion of the Interstate 17 southbound reopened Sunday after a vehicle had set fire earlier, authorities announced.

The two left lanes on the I-17 southbound have been cleared but drivers should still expect delays while authorities work to clear the five vehicle accident that occurred near Indian School Road shortly after 2 p.m.

Only one vehicle had caught fire and was extinguished by the second arriving engine company, Phoenix police said.

One woman, 18, was taken to the hospital in critical condition and a man, 30, was taken in stable condition.

Earlier, authorities redirected all traffic off of the freeway due to vehicle fire.

ADOT advised southbound travelers to use the Loop 101 and US 60.

There is no estimated time to reopen all lanes.

No other information was immediately available.
