Fire breaks out at building under construction near ASU in Tempe

May 11, 2021, 8:02 PM | Updated: 9:09 pm

PHOENIX — A fire broke out at a building under construction near Arizona State University in Tempe on Tuesday evening, according to authorities.

Since the building on Rural Road and University Drive is under construction, no active classes or research was taking place when the blaze broke out, according to authorities.

Fire crews were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. and got the fire under control.

Authorities said construction materials on the roof caught on fire, but it is undetermined what ignited the fire.

No injuries were reported.

The fire also forced the closure of the light rail between the Veterans Way/College Ave. and Dorsey/Apache Blvd. stations, with a bus being deployed to transport passengers.

No additional information was made immediately available at this time.
