PHOENIX – A 58-year-old Phoenix woman was charged with murder in the death of man who was stabbed in the head last week, according to court documents.

Stephanie Dawn Whitney was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated robbery.

The previous evening, around 10:30, police responded to a call about an injured person at a QuikTrip near 27th and Northern avenues. They found a man in the parking lot with stab wounds to the head, according to the probable cause statement.

The victim, identified Monday as 64-year-old Herbert Cox, died after being taken to a hospital, according to a Phoenix Police Department press release.

According to the probable cause statement, surveillance video showed Whitney striking Cox in the head multiple times. It also showed a man appearing to go through the victim’s pockets and another man driving off in Cox’s black Kia Optima.

Whitney, who is described as homeless in the court documents, had initially been interviewed by police as a witness. She was located and arrested at a house near 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road around 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Whitney’s bail was set at $1 million, and her status conference was scheduled for Thursday.

No other information was immediately available.
