PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey ordered flags at half-staff on Friday in remembrance of the eight victims shot and killed Thursday night at a FedEx processing center near the Indianapolis airport.

“Last night, an evil act of violence took the lives of eight people and wounded several others,” Ducey said in a press release. “Arizona stands with the families of the victims and the entire Indianapolis community at this tragic time and we send our deepest condolences.”

Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on Tuesday.

Indianapolis Deputy Police Chief Craig McCartt said the gunman, identified as 19-year-old Brandon Scott Hole of Indiana, started randomly shooting at people in the parking lot and then went into the building and continued firing.

He said the shooter apparently died by suicide shortly before police entered the building.

McCartt said four people were killed outside the building and another four inside. Several people were also wounded, including five who were taken to the hospital.

The carnage took just a couple of minutes. “It did not last very long,” he said.

The coroner’s office began the process of identifying victims Friday afternoon and added it would take several hours.
