Board approves ASU, UArizona, NAU tuition proposals for 2021-22

Apr 15, 2021, 5:00 PM | Updated: 10:03 pm

PHOENIX – The Arizona Board of Regents on Thursday approved tuition proposals that keep 2021-22 base rates unchanged for resident undergraduates at the state’s three public universities.

It’s the second consecutive year without an increase in tuition for in-state undergrads at Arizona State University, the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University, according to a press release from the schools’ governing body.

ASU is maintaining tuition levels for all students, although the Tempe-based school will implement a variety of fee increases and new fees.

While there will be no tuition change for resident undergrads at UArizona and NAU, all other students will see varying increases. The Tucson and Flagstaff schools also will raise multiple fees.

“We recognize the financial hardship faced by many students due to the pandemic and its impacts on the economy, so we appreciate the efforts of university presidents who have avoided any tuition increase for Arizona resident undergraduates for two consecutive years,” ABOR Chairman Larry E. Penley said in the release.

“As Arizona begins to emerge from this pandemic, ASU, NAU and UArizona will play a vital role in aiding our economic recovery and preparing these students for the workforce they’ll soon join.”

The three schools’ 2021-22 fee proposals were released on March 26.

In advance of Thursday’s ABOR vote, a public comment session was held and the school presidents presented their plans to the board.

“Stable and low tuition coupled with significant opportunities for financial aid opens pathways for all Arizona students,” ABOR Executive Director John Arnold said in the release.

“Post high school educational attainment is among the best steps a student can take to improve their own lives and the board’s tuition and financial aid policies can help make that a reality.”
