PHOENIX — The city of Buckeye last week broke ground on a 38-acre expansion at Sundance Park that will bring a variety of new amenities.

Expected to be complete in about a year, the park’s expansion will add a fishing lake with a pavilion, splash pad, lighted basketball courts and multi-use sports fields as well as additional playgrounds, ramadas and restrooms.

Water from the new splash pad will drain into the fishing lake and then be used to irrigate the turf fields, according to a press release.

“These new amenities are a direct result of input from Buckeye residents during the public meeting process in 2017 and 2018,” Mayor Orsborn said in the release.

Funding for the project at the existing park at 22865 W. Lower Buckeye Rd. comes from several sources, according to the release.

This includes a $3 million grant from the Land and Conservation Fund, administered through Arizona State Parks and Trails, along with other funds from impact fees paid by developers.

The park – opened in 2012 – currently features a large shaded playground, dog park for large and small dogs, two lighted youth baseball and softball fields, a lighted football/soccer field, four lighted sand volleyball courts and a walking path.

Buckeye city parks are open from dawn until 10 p.m. unless otherwise stated.
