PHOENIX – The registration deadline for this month’s Pat’s Run, the popular annual fundraising event honoring the legacy of Pat Tillman, is less than two weeks away.
April 17 is the last to day to sign up for the 17th annual event, which will be a virtual affair for the second consecutive year.
April 24 is considered run day, but the window to run or walk the 4.2 miles as part of Pat’s Run is April 23-25. Organizers are using the RaceJoy app to track results this year.
The distance is a tribute to Tillman’s uniform number, 42, when he starred for the Arizona State University football team.
Tillman also played for the Arizona Cardinals before enlisting in the U.S. Army after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He was killed while deployed in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.
All participants in the adult portions of Pat’s Run will get a T-shirt and medal, although it’s past the deadline to guarantee that your packet will arrive before the event. The registration fee is $42 for Pat’s Run and $15 for the .42-mile kids’ run.
New for 2021 is the Pat’s Run Challenge Series, which is made up of Pat’s Run, a virtual Pat’s Run Challenge 10K and a virtual Pat’s Run 42 in 40 Challenge. Participants in the 42 in 40 challenge commit to running, walking or hiking 42 miles in the 40 days from Oct. 3 to Veterans Day (Nov. 11).
Each leg of the challenge series comes with a T-shirt and medal, and participants who complete all three will receive an “special giveaway,” according to the event website.
The registration fee is $90 for all three legs and $77 a bundle of two challenges.
The run usually takes place on the streets of Tempe, with the finish line inside Sun Devil Stadium. It raises money for the Pat Tillman Foundation’s Tillman Scholars program for military members, veterans and spouses.
The Pat Tilman Foundation encourages runners to join the Pat’s Run Facebook group to stay connected.
