Man arrested for allegedly running red light, speeding in fatal Phoenix crash

PHOENIX – A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly running a red light at a high rate of speed that resulted in a fatal collision in Phoenix early Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

Austin B. Clark was booked for manslaughter, endangerment and aggravated assault in the collision that occurred before 7 a.m. on Washington Street near 40th Street, just north of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

A 40-year-old woman driving the other vehicle in the collision, identified as Madalena Mendonca, died after being taken to the hospital, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Police say a 19-year-old woman who was in the car with Mendonca remains hospitalized in critical condition after suffering life-threatening injuries.

A 64-year-old woman crossing the street at the time of the collision was also hit, but her injuries are non-life-threatening, according to authorities.

Light rail service was disrupted for hours Tuesday due to the collision, with Valley Metro using busses to shuttle rail passengers between the 38th Street and 44th Street platforms.

Service resumed through that segment around 2 p.m., Valley Metro said, but with delays of 15-20 minutes in each direction.
