ASU, UArizona, NAU aim to keep tuition level for in-state undergrads

Mar 26, 2021, 3:15 PM

PHOENIX – Tuition for in-state undergraduate students at Arizona’s three public universities wouldn’t change in 2021-22 under proposals released Friday.

If the proposals are approved, it would be the second consecutive school year without a tuition increase for resident undergrads.

The Arizona Board of Regents, the state universities’ governing body, has scheduled a public comment session about the proposals on April 6 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Information about how to participate will be posted on the ABOR website, and the hearing will be streamed online. Comments can also be emailed to tuition@azregents.edu.

The university presidents will present their proposals to the board on April 8 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The board is expected to vote on April 15.

Arizona State University’s proposal has no tuition changes but includes a variety of fee increases and new fees for undergrads in the Herberger Institute for Design and Arts and multiple graduate programs.

Resident graduate students face tuition increases of 5% at Northern Arizona University and 1.4% at the University of Arizona. Those schools are also proposing a variety of fee increases.

“I appreciate the work of our universities in proposing no increase for resident undergraduate students for the second year,” ABOR Chair Larry E. Penley said in a press release.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has placed financial hardship on many students and this reflects our commitment to ensuring an affordable education even as our institutions experience fiscal challenges wrought from the pandemic.”

We want to hear from you.
