Arizona’s online vaccine appointments filled Friday in under 3 hours

PHOENIX – The latest batch of online appointments for COVID-19 vaccines at Arizona’s state-run sites were filled within three hours of being released on Friday.
The state put around 77,000 spots up for grabs at 11 a.m.
There were 38,450 appointments at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, 13,980 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, 10,200 at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, 8,150 at the University of Arizona and 6,300 at the Yuma Convention Center, which opens Monday, the Arizona Department of Health Services said Thursday.
By 12:30 p.m. Friday, the only spots left were at State Farm Stadium and Yuma, according to the ADHS Twitter account.
At about 1:50 p.m., Health Director Dr. Cara Christ said during her weekly press briefing that all the online appointments were gone but a limited number remained via the state’s vaccine call center (844-542-8201).

Every Friday at 11 a.m., ADHS releases appointments for first doses the following week at the state-run operations.
In addition, spots can open at any time through any provider because of cancellations and additional deliveries, so vaccine seekers should continue checking any or all of the registration options regularly.
Appointments at the state’s five mass vaccination sites can be made online at https://podvaccine.azdhs.gov/ or through the call center.
For other Valley availability, the Maricopa County Public Health website has a COVID-19 vaccine location finder with a map and list of pharmacies, government-run sites, health clinics and pop-up distribution events along with links to the applicable registration pages.
More than 3 million vaccine doses have been administered in Arizona, and over a quarter of the state’s population has received at least one shot.
Earlier this week, anybody at least 16 years old became eligible at any state-run site or Maricopa County point of dispensing. Appointments are required.
The minimum age is 16 for the Pfizer vaccine and 18 for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson shots.
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines each require two doses spaced several weeks apart, while Johnson & Johnson is the only single-shot version authorized for use in the U.S.
The brand varies by location. The state-run sites all use Pfizer. The Maricopa County location finder is sortable by vaccine type.
Since March 14, anybody getting a first shot at Chandler-Gilbert Community College has been scheduled for their second dose at a soon-to-open indoor drive-thru site in southeast Mesa.
The new site will be operated by Dexcom at 8046 E. Ray Road, just off the Loop 202 Santan Freeway near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.
It will open on April 5 to replace the state-run Chandler site, which will shut down April 3.
