PHOENIX — Rangers with the National Park Service found the body believed to belong to a missing Kentucky man below the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, authorities said Thursday.
The body, who authorities think belongs to 40-year-old John Pennington, was located along with a motorcycle Wednesday about 465 feet below the South Kaibab trailhead following a multiday search and rescue operation.
Pennington, from Walton, Kentucky, had been reported missing since Feb. 23.
He entered the Grand Canyon the same day and abandoned his personal vehicle near Yaki Point, NPS said in a press release.
NPS and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the incident.
Tt was the second Grand Canyon death reported the past two weeks.
On Feb. 23, park rangers found the body of a missing California woman, Lillian Meyn, 300 feet below the South Rim near Trailview Overlook along the Hermit Road.
