PHOENIX — Two Arizonans plead guilty in a $300 million telemarketing fraud scheme, Phoenix Police arrested a man in connection to a shooting at Desert Sky Mall and a renovation project at a 50-year-old park in south Phoenix was completed.

2 Arizona residents plead guilty in $300M telemarketing fraud scheme
Two Arizonans have plead guilty for their roles in a $300 million telemarketing fraud scheme that targeted elderly and other vulnerable victims nationwide, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
James Anthony Sierra and Irma Beatrice Timmerman were part of a group of 11 defendants who entered a guilty plea to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
Sierra, a manager of telemarketing call centers in Tempe, agreed to pay $100,000 in restitution to all identified victims as part of his plea.
Timmerman, an owner and operator of Arizona-based companies involved in the scheme, agreed to pay $1,853,293 in restitution as part of her plea.
In October, 60 people were indicted in the widespread magazine telemarketing scam that authorities say targeted more than 150,000 people.
Police arrest 20-year-old for murder at Desert Sky Mall shooting in Phoenix
Phoenix Police announced the arrest of one man in connection to a shooting at Desert Sky Mall that left one man dead and another injured.
Police arrested 20-year-old Alexi Acosta and charged him with one count of homicide and one count of assault, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
On Feb. 14, Phoenix police responded to the mall near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road just before 12:45 p.m. and found two men with gunshot wounds.
One of the gunshot victims, 17-year-old Alejandro Martinez, died at the hospital.
The preliminary investigation indicated both victims went into the mall where there was an argument over merchandise with an employee at a kiosk, according to authorities.
$220,000 renovation completed at 50-year-old Phoenix park
City officials unveiled a completed renovation project at a 50-year-old park in a south Phoenix neighborhood this week.
Lenang Park, which opened near 24th Street and Broadway Road in 1969, was updated with a new basketball court, playground, turf area, benches and lighting.
The playground features climbing areas, a slide and swings.
The $220,000 renovation cost was paid for by the voter-approved Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative.
2 more teens arrested in parking garage shooting of UArizona student
Two additional 17-year-olds have been arrested in connection to the fatal shooting of a University of Arizona student in a campus parking garage last weekend, authorities said Saturday.
Roberto Joaquin Camargo and Ruben Young were booked into Pima County Jail on charges of first-degree murder and drive-by shooting, the Tucson Police Department announced.
Alonzo Orosco, 17, was arrested Thursday and booked on the same charges.
The three teens are accused of shooting and killing 20-year-old Forrest Beckett Keys, a sophomore from Philadelphia majoring in communications, on Feb. 20.
‘Piggy Bank Bandit’ accused of 2 more bank robberies in Phoenix
Authorities say a suspect known as the “Piggy Bank Bandit” robbed two U.S. Bank branches in Phoenix on Friday.
He has been accused of four other robberies in Mesa and Phoenix, in addition to the initial robbery in Tempe on Dec. 1.
The crimes on Friday occurred at the branches near the corner of Deer Valley Drive and Tatum Boulevard at 1 p.m. and near the corner of Seventh Street and Bell Road at 4:40 p.m., according to a release.
Dubbed the “Piggy Bank Bandit” due to leaving with coin rolls from one of the robberies, authorities say the suspect approached the teller during each of the incidents and presented a demand note.
The suspect, whose gender is unknown, is described as being between 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 and 25 to 35 years old.
