PHOENIX — A gas line break had Phoenix fire crews battling a large blaze for around two hours early Sunday morning near Seventh Street and University Drive.
The Phoenix Fire Department was called to the scene shortly after 4 a.m. due to reports of flames and smoke coming from under the Seventh Street bridge, according to authorities.
Officials say firefighters were met with 20 to 30-foot flames that were fed by a 10-inch main gas line that ruptured.
Southwest Gas shut down the main gas line as fire crews worked to put out the blaze that was extinguished around 6 a.m., according to authorities.
Nobody was hurt in the incident.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego in a press conference Sunday afternoon said it appears the Seventh Street bridge will be closed for up to several months due to damage sustained from the fire.
A Southwest Gas official said Sunday it was too early to tell why the gas line, which was surveyed last May, ruptured and an investigation in partnership with the Phoenix Fire Department is underway.
